George Marks Design is a boutique interior design studio working across Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and nationally. Led by Georgie Marks – an interior designer with an Honours degree in Interior Architecture and more than twelve years inside Melbourne’s most respected design practices – the studio was founded in 2018 on a simple idea: exceptional, forward-thinking design should also feel approachable.

Since opening, GMD has been published across leading Australian design titles and shortlisted multiple times for the Australian Interior Design Awards. We work from studios in Frankston South and Melbourne, on the lands of the Wurundjeri and Bunurong/Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation, delivering residential, multi-residential, hospitality and retail interiors.

A designer who has been the client

Our focus is boutique residential interior design – and Georgie understands the experience from both sides of the table.

Before the age of thirty, she had completed three substantial residential renovations on her own properties across Victoria. She loved the problem-solving. She survived the stressful bits. And she came away with an intimate working knowledge of every phase, from first concept sketch to final site handover.

Those projects taught her what is genuinely achievable inside a real budget and a real timeline – and how the balance between cost, design ambition and program has to stay front of mind from day one. Wearing the hats of designer and client simultaneously, as a residential developer, she learned to value efficient, decisive design practice above all else. That perspective underpins every George Marks Design project.

Georgie’s study in interior architecture means our thinking doesn’t stop at the wall line. We’re equally comfortable resolving exterior building design and façade outcomes as we are detailing joinery to 1:20 – and we bring an intuitive, unhurried process to both.

We’re also well connected. When your project calls for it, we source trusted builders, trades and consultants from our established network, so the handover from design to construction is a straight line rather than a hurdle.

Our interior design process

A clear six-phase process, so you always know what’s happening and what’s next.

Phase 1 – Pre-Concept

Following appointment, we run a high-level project briefing to establish your requirements and inclusions wish-list. Depending on location, we undertake a site visit and full site measure, capturing existing interior and exterior conditions while liaising with your established and required consultants. Where original floor plans can be obtained from past site works, these inform our preliminary GMD floor plans. We then explore concept directions through a curated look-and-feel imagery package.

Phase 2 – Concept

Proposed floor plans are brought to life with a three-dimensional concept model. The model prescribes form, finish, fixtures and fittings – and, importantly, conveys a genuine sense of human scale. It’s an interactive process that runs hand-in-hand with your finishes selection.

Phase 3 – Documentation

Your approved concept is realised as a complete documented suite: floor plans and detailed 1:20 joinery drawings. We establish and populate full project schedules covering fixtures, fittings, electrical, finishes, lighting, door hardware and window furnishings.

Phase 4 – Construction Detail Documentation

A complete construction package is prepared – final floor plans, joinery drawings and finalised schedules – ready for builder or developer tendering.

Phase 5 – Construction Period

We can facilitate tender reviews with you and prospective builders, then stay involved to make sure the designed outcome is the one that lands on site. Our construction-phase services include liaising with builders and consultants, assessing shop drawings, and attending site and defects inspections as requested.

Phase 6 – Furniture, Lighting and Styling Procurement

Not every project needs the full transformation, but we love finishing a space properly. We produce detailed schedules of curated furniture, lighting and styling selections, present them to you, and can shop items alongside you on request. Our GMD trade discounts are extended to every client.

What’s the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

Interior decorating deals with the finishing layer – furniture, styling, soft furnishings and colour. Interior design goes structural: spatial planning, joinery detailing, lighting, fixtures and how the building actually works. With a background in interior architecture, we do both, and can scale our involvement to suit your project.

Can I engage you for just one phase?

Yes. Many clients begin with concept design, then decide how far to take us. Others engage us end to end, from first briefing through to styling on handover day.

Do you work with builders and other consultants?

We do – and we’re happy to recommend from our trusted network of builders, trades and consultants, or to work alongside a team you’ve already appointed.
