George Marks Design is a boutique-scale practice led by Georgie (she/her), a designer with an Honours degree in Interior Architecture. Having worked at some of Melbourne’s most prominent design practices for over 12 years, Georgie opened the studio in 2019 to provide excellent, forward-thinking and approachable design to her clients.
Since its founding, GMD has been published in multiple Australian publications and in 2022 was shortlisted for two Australian Interior Design Awards. The practice is located both in Mount Martha and Melbourne, on the lands of the Wurundjeri and Bunurong/Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation. GMD works across multiple sectors including residential, multi-residential, hospitality and retail.
With a key focus on boutique residential design, Georgie understands the reality of life as a client. Before the age of 30, she had completed three substantial residential renovations on personal properties across Victoria. Throughout these projects, she reveled in the problem-solving nature and occasionally stressful process, but now has an intimate understanding and appreciation for all phases, design and construct.
These renovations provided Georgie with first-hand knowledge of what is achievable in the design process, and how the balance between budget, design and time must be kept front of mind. Additionally, as residential developer, Georgie had to simultaneously wear the hats of designer and client and learnt to appreciate the importance of efficient design practice. These learnings underpin the work completed on each George Marks Design project.
Throughout her career, Georgie has relished the opportunity to explore exterior building design outcomes with an appreciation for architectural design. Being able to apply design practices inside and outside the building, Georgie brings an intuitive design process with an approachable outlook. With her work approach being frictionless, Georgie is well versed in sourcing our preferred building and trade contractors when required.
George Marks Design’s investment in your project is to minimise the stress and unknowns of a designed outcome and the on-site realities of construction. Currently crafting projects across five Australian States and Territories, Georgie and her team are excited to work further with clients to achieve their dream residential design outcomes.
Phase 1 – Pre-Concept
Post appointment, we conduct a high-level project briefing to establish the project requirements and our clients’ inclusions wish-list. Depending on location, we may undertake a site visit and site measure, capturing interior and exterior existing conditions while liaising with established and required consultants. On occasion, we are able to obtain original floor plans from past site works, which serve to create our GMD preliminary Floor Plans.
We explore Concept directions through an imagery look and feel package. During this process, we use reference graphics to influence potential Concept designs.
Phase 2 – Concept
Our proposed Floor Plans are complimented by a three-dimensional generated Concept Model which animates our proposed designs. The modelled outcome prescribes forms, finishes, fixtures, fittings and importantly, conjures a sense of the human scale. The interactive process closely relates to the proposed selection of finishes.
Phase 3 – Documentation
Our approved Concept Design is realised in a complete documented suite of Floor Plans and detailed 1:20 scale Joinery Drawings. We establish and populate Project Schedules inclusive of Fixtures, Fittings, Electrical, Finishes, Lighting, Door Hardware, Window Furnishing, or as required.
Phase 4 – Construction Detail Documentation
A completed Construction Package is prepared including detailed final Floor Plans, Joinery Drawings and finalised Schedules in readiness for builder or developer tendering.
Phase 5 – Construction Period
During the project’s tendering process, GMD can facilitate tender reviews with clients and the potential appointed builders. GMD can assist clients in ensuring the designed outcome is realised onsite. Our services during construction period are liaising with builder and consultants, assessing shop drawings and attending site and defects inspections as requested.
Phase 6 – Furniture Lighting and Styling Procurement
While not all projects require the full transformation, we enjoy welcoming a procured and curated selection of styled furniture items to compliment your enhanced environment. We take the stress out of assembling the collection by producing detailed Schedules for potential selections. Beyond presenting, we can shop items with clients on request. We issue our GMD trade discounts to all of our clients.
